Diversity, Inclusion & Sustainability Policy

Our Commitment

At Why We Run, we believe in creating a community where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued, and where our collective impact on the planet reflects the care we show to each other.

We are committed to:

  • Welcoming participants, crew, partners, and supporters from all backgrounds and identities.
  • Creating an environment of mutual respect, psychological safety, and belonging.
  • Minimising our environmental footprint and promoting sustainable practices in every part of our event and operations.

Diversity & Inclusion

We value the rich diversity of the ultra and adventure running community, and we actively work to break down the barriers that prevent people from taking part.

We will:

  • Encourage applications and participation from underrepresented groups, including (but not limited to) women, people of colour, LGBTQIA+ individuals, disabled people, and those from low-income backgrounds.
  • Provide inclusive comms, imagery, and storytelling that reflect a range of voices and lived experiences.
  • Ensure our event is physically, emotionally, and socially inclusive, and make adjustments where possible to accommodate individual needs.
  • Maintain a zero-tolerance policy on discrimination, harassment, or hate speech of any kind.

We expect all participants, crew, and partners to uphold these values and challenge behaviour that contradicts them.

Sustainability & Environmental Stewardship

Running through wild landscapes is a privilege, and we take our role as environmental stewards seriously.

We are committed to:

  • Minimising waste through reusable systems, responsible sourcing, and strict anti-litter policies.
  • Reducing carbon footprint by limiting vehicle use, encouraging shared transport, and offsetting key emissions where feasible.
  • Sourcing from local, ethical, and sustainable suppliers wherever possible.
  • Protecting local wildlife and ecosystems, including adapting routes and practices to avoid disruption during sensitive seasons.
  • Educating our community on leave-no-trace principles and celebrating positive environmental action.

Accountability & Continuous Improvement

This is not a tick-box policy, it’s a living commitment.

We will:

  • Review this policy annually and update our practices in response to feedback, learning, and evolving standards.
  • Welcome honest conversations about where we can improve.
  • Ensure this policy is embedded across our crew training, event briefings, partner agreements, and communications.
